Organizing Thoughts in Essay Format

Essay format refers to the construction or organization of ideas in an essay. An essay follows a format in which the introduction comes first, is followed by the thesis statement, and then the body and the conclusion.

An essay's introduction refers to the beginning or introduction of the paper's topic. The introduction is about making the main subject of the essay known to the readers. An introduction is an author's way of selling his or her paper to the readers. If an author fails to catch the attention of his or her readers, then the essay fails in its objective. There are many ways of starting an essay. An author may share a quote, an analogy or a question. After delivering a catchy first sentence, an author may then give background information on his or her topic. He or she must successfully express why they decided to research the topic. This will lead an author to his or her next step - the thesis statement.

A thesis statement is an important part of an essay's format. It gives the readers an overview of the whole essay. It is around the thesis statement that the arguments, claims and discussions revolve. After writing the thesis statement, the discussion and argument begins, which make up the essay body.

The body serves as the support system of the essay. A format is incomplete without the body. An author interprets the researched materials and analyzes them, then discusses and interprets them in the body. The ideas in an essay's body should be organized so that readers will not be confused.

The conclusion is the author’s last chance to prove his or her point. The conclusion also summarizes all the points, discussions, claims and ideas presented in the essay. Furthermore, in the conclusion, the author is able to say his or her final thoughts.
